How to Dye Easter Eggs With Tea

tea dyed easter eggs

One of our fondest moments this time of year is decorating easter eggs around the table as a family. We always used the store bought kits and decorated designs with crayons and stickers. Easter breads would be made with spare eggs and come Easter Sunday we would all get to crack open the egg we decorated and enjoy it at breakfast.

This year we are trying a new way of dying eggs and one that is all natural! A fun twist for the family as we explore the world of tea, we are dying eggs with tea and other ingredients to see if we can make fun colors. Try this simple how to below and try for yourself.

INGREDIENTS

  • Eggs (hardboiled)
  • Vinegar
  • 6 cups or glasses
  • Water
  • 1-2 teaspoonsMatcha Green Tea Poweder (use more for a brighter green)
  • 1-2 teaspoons Rooibos Tea (use more for a brighter orange)
  • 1-2 teaspoons Hibiscus Tea (use more for a brighter red)
  • 1-2 teaspoons Lipton Tea Bags (use more for a darker brown)
  • Shaved onion peels (for yellow)
  • Beat juice (for pink)
  • Blueberry juice (for blue)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Bring a big pot of water to boil and boil the eggs for 10 minutes.
TIP: This works best if the eggs are room temperature and a few days old.
  2. Add 1-2 spoon fulls of tea to each cup and let it seep for 30 minutes.
  3. Add 1-2 teaspoons of vinegar to each one.
  4. Add one boiled egg to each cup.
  5. Let the eggs sit overnight.
  6. Carefully remove and wipe with a towel.

Enjoy! The taste of the egg inside is not altered by the tea and you have an alternative to store bought egg dying kits.
